Benefits of a Humble Heart—Part 1
"Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD." 2 Chronicles 34:27
It’s not all about us, but it’s all about Him.
I remember years ago when I was a young teen, a friend of mine was going to Palm Springs and his family invited me to go along with them. We spent most of our time swimming and just being kids. As we jumped out of the pool on one occasion and were running back into the hotel room, my toe hit the threshold of the hotel room and I stubbed my toe. I hopped around for a while and tried to avert the pain. My friend’s mom got some ice and gave me some pain reliever to help my toe.
About midnight that night, I couldn’t take the pain anymore. I got out of bed, hopped over to my friend’s parents’ room, and told them I needed to go see a doctor. Graciously, they got dressed and took me to the emergency room. As I was waiting there, the nurse came by to see what was wrong and I stuck my foot up on the wheelchair and said, "It’s bad. It’s real bad." As she was writing some notes down, suddenly, several ambulances drove into the parking lot. Apparently there had been a collision between a Greyhound bus and a semi truck on the freeway. I sat there and watched as people who were clinging to life came through the emergency room. After a while, I looked down at my toe then looked to my friend and his parents and said, "I guess we can go back to the hotel now. I think I’ll be okay."
That night I had to learn that my problem was nothing compared to the problems of others. Sometimes we can get so tied up in our schedule or so busy with our own life that we fail to see those around us who are hurting. Sometimes pride can fill our hearts and we can overlook those whom we could help. God wants us to realize it’s not all about us, but it’s all about Him.
When we humble our hearts, we will be able to see the needs of others and Christ will be able to work through us. Today let’s look at two benefits of a humble heart.
First, when someone has a humbled heart, the heart is emptied of self. When you humble your heart and cease from relying on yourself, your trust will be placed in Christ and He will be able to bless your faith.
Second, a humbled heart is a necessity when approaching God. When you humble yourself and obtain a correct view of yourself, you will also obtain a correct view of God. God is the Creator of the world! How can we approach Him without a humble heart? He deserves all respect and honor, and we can only give Him the glory He deserves if we are humble before Him.
Do you have a humble heart before God, and are you willing to serve others? Don’t become so caught up in your own agenda that you fail to see the needs of others. Make sure you humble yourself before God and that your trust is in Him alone. Take time to approach God with a humble heart today. Ask Him to take your eyes off yourself so you can see the needs of those around you. Seek to be an encouragement to someone who is hurting toda
